Today was the last lesson we have with our kids. We decided to have the boys and the girls together the whole day today since it was the last one. We first gave out permission slips in order for us to be able to send in their pictures to the Dear World website and then we started planning the party. Next Monday is the celebration of learners day which means just a party day. We were asking the kids if they wanted to help by bringing in some stuff they made at home, but they didn't want to do that. However, they asked if they gave us money if we could bake stuff to bring, so that's what I plan to be doing this weekend. I can't make all my legit cookies and stuff because the sugars here are kind of weird. They are like big crystals if that makes any sense. After we talked about that we gave them a copy of their pictures and went on painting rocks. The grade 7 and 8 kids are the "graduating class" because next year grade 8 will be part of high school. We are painting rocks and putting their names on them so that Monday we can have a mini-ceremony where they can place their rocks all over Lynedoch.
Second class, we had Cheslin come and talk to the kids. As a reminder, Cheslin is the guy who drove us around on the project day. He came from the same background as then and told them his story about how education got him out of the townships and to where he is now. He did the whole thing in Afrikaans which was perfect, but we had no idea what he said. After listening to him, we took a big group picture with Cheslin and just played some games outside. Maureen and Vanessa played games with the girl and I just hung out and talked with the guys. They seemed a lot more open today. A lot of them told me that they had an idea of what they wanted to do, but they just didn't know how to get there. It was pretty fun to talk to them about it. That's about it for my class.
Here is what Tyler has to say, "Today in class we painted our paper mache globes that we started making a
couple of weeks ago. Going outside with the students is always a
gamble. You never know how they are going to act. So they were painting
their globes and a few of them finished. I took them around the building
to put it somewhere and so they could write their names. A couple of
minutes later a few more came and they decided to put paint all over
their clothes and thought it would be funny to use it as lipstick. Not
the smartest thing for paint so they went immediately to the bathroom to
wash off. We also sanded some more tables."
We came home and wrote our LAST JOURNAL!! We decided that last night was a good night to stay up until around 2am talking, so we were really tired when we got home. This means we took an awesome nap. We are now just hanging out and watching TV. That's about all for tonight. Hamba Kakuhle.
